This stunning tray is truly unique. Turned from a single piece of Burr Oak, the unusual grain pattern is magnificent, rich in colour and character. Burr wood is wood usually found in a bulbous outgrowth on the side of the trunk or branch of a tree. The grain in the growth has grown in a deformed manner and is full of small knots, which is what creates the highly figured and sought after wood which is prized for its beauty and rarity. This tray was made a from a burr on an Oak tree in Northamptonshire.
A one-off handmade piece, the circular wooden tray will make a beautiful decorative display piece, adding texture and warmth to your home, or can be used as a tray for carrying or holding other items. The tray has been finished with a sanding sealer and hard wax oil to protect the wood. The tray measures 30.5cm in diameter by 5cm in height, with an internal depth of 3cm.
As the grain in burr wood is twisted and interlocked it is more difficult to work with and turn on a lathe as it can chip or shatter unpredictably. However, the interlocked, dense nature of the grain also makes it resistant to splitting. Once the tray was turned, it was finely sanded by hand to provide an extremely smooth finish. A fine example of handmade British craftsmanship, this special piece will look fantastic on a side cabinet, shelf, tabletop or kitchen side, whether in a contemporary or traditional home. The tray was designed and made by hand by Alastair Matthews, in his workshop near Saffron Walden in Essex.
